Oil prices surge amid escalating US Iran conflict

Oil prices surge amid escalating US Iran conflict. When military aircraft strike and missiles fly across borders, oil prices react instantly. The Strait of Hormuz is not just a waterway but a nerve centre of the global economy, and any tension in the region is reflected in higher prices at petrol stations worldwide. The latest round of confrontation between Washington and Tehran has once again shaken markets, reminding us that geopolitics remains the key driver of oil prices.

As of 18:15 Eastern Time on Sunday, West Texas Intermediate crude for August delivery hit a high of $85.17 per barrel, up $2.68, or 3.25 percent, on the New York Mercantile Exchange, while Brent crude for September delivery reached $90.97 per barrel on the ICE Futures London exchange, up $2.87, or 3.26 percent. On Saturday, Iran resumed attacks on US allies in the Persian Gulf after US Central Command completed a new round of strikes on Iran overnight.

Iran's semi official Mehr news agency reported explosions in Bushehr province, as well as in Sirik and Qeshm districts in Hormozgan province, while the official IRNA news agency reported five explosions in central Iran's Yazd province. On Friday evening, US Central Command said in a post on social media platform X that US forces had completed a seventh consecutive night of strikes on Iran, hitting surveillance sites, military logistics infrastructure, underground weapons storage and naval facilities.

The rise in oil prices reflects market concerns about possible supply disruptions from the Gulf region, through which about 20% of global oil passes. The escalation of the conflict, including strikes on Iranian infrastructure and retaliatory attacks on US allies, creates significant uncertainty. Analysts warn that if tensions persist, prices could continue to rise, especially given already tight global supply.

As CCTV+ reports. Investors are closely watching developments, fearing that the conflict could escalate into a broader regional confrontation that could disrupt energy supplies for a prolonged period.
