Andy Burnham Will Become the New Prime Minister of the United Kingdom
Andy Burnham has been elected as the new leader of the UK's governing Labour Party. Shabana Mahmood, Chair of the party's National Executive Committee, officially announced the decision at a special party conference. As Labour is currently the ruling party, the 56-year-old politician will automatically assume the office of Prime Minister.
The official handover at Downing Street is scheduled for today, July 20. Andy Burnham will succeed Keir Starmer, who previously announced his decision to step down as Prime Minister.
The leadership election was uncontested, with British media already describing the process as a "coronation." When the nomination period closed on July 15, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester was the sole candidate. His candidacy was backed by 369 of the Labour Party's 403 MPs, as well as by all trade unions affiliated with the party.
