Indian Railways is preparing to launch the country's first train powered by hydrogen fuel cells. Unlike conventional trains, the new train will generate electricity on board through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. The only by-product of this process is water vapor, making the train completely environmentally friendly and free of harmful emissions.

The train will operate on the 89-kilometre Jind–Sonipat route at speeds of up to 110 km/h. To support the project, India's largest dedicated hydrogen refuelling facility has been built in Jind, where green hydrogen is produced on-site using water electrolysis.

Scale and safety technologies

The Indian project stands out globally because of its scale.

• High capacity: While hydrogen trains in other countries usually consist of only 2 to 4 coaches, the Indian train has 10 coaches and can carry up to 2,600 passengers at a time.

• Multi-level safety: Highly sensitive sensors can detect even the smallest hydrogen leak, smoke, or temperature increase within seconds and automatically shut off the fuel supply without human intervention.

• Independent certification: The entire hydrogen system was designed in accordance with strict international standards and successfully certified by independent experts from the German company TÜV SÜD.

Entirely designed and assembled in India, this ambitious project highlights the country's commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions and developing the sustainable transportation systems of the future.
