Fifth day of mutual strikes between the US and Iran

When warplanes strike and air defence systems engage, conflict ceases to be a diplomatic dispute and becomes a test of endurance. Each new attack invites a response, and each response fuels another round of tensions. Iran and the US are once again caught in a vicious cycle where "escalation" is not just a term but a daily reality, and any miscalculation could lead to even graver consequences.

On Wednesday, US forces carried out a new round of strikes on Iran, US Central Command reported. "At 15:00 Eastern Time (19:00 GMT), US forces began a second wave of strikes on Iran," the command said in a post on X. "The strikes target Iranian military facilities used to threaten vessels transiting freely through the Strait of Hormuz."

The operation concluded six hours later, with US forces hitting Iranian command centres, air defence positions, missile and drone sites, and coastguard facilities. Earlier on Wednesday, the command said it had launched a wave of strikes on Iran at 06:00 Eastern Time (10:00 GMT). During the 90 minute wave, forces used precision munitions against coastal defence systems and cruise missile storage and launch sites on Greater Tunb Island.

Iran responded immediately to the US attacks. State television reported late on Wednesday that explosions had been heard near a US military base in Kuwait several hours earlier, and preliminary assessments indicated significant damage to US military equipment and personnel. The claim has yet to be confirmed by either US or Kuwaiti officials. A spokesman for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said Iran's current operations are focused on destroying US offensive infrastructure in the region, and further operations will follow. The spokesman also noted that the enemy should not assume it can maintain the current tempo of hostilities and drag the conflict into a war of attrition.

The US Iran conflict resumed in mid July after a series of strikes following Iran's attempt to close the Strait of Hormuz. The US says its strikes are aimed at protecting freedom of navigation, while Iran views them as a violation of its sovereignty and responds with attacks on US assets in the region. The situation remains extremely tense, and international observers are urging both sides to de escalate.

As CCTV+ reports. The latest strikes and retaliatory actions confirm that the conflict is far from over, and prospects for a diplomatic solution remain uncertain.
