International law exists not to be interpreted at will but to be upheld. Resolution 2758 of the UN General Assembly, adopted more than half a century ago, remains an unshakeable foundation for the international community's relations with China. When the UNGA President publicly reaffirms this principle, it reminds all member states that the norms enshrined in UN documents are binding, and no political circumstances can overturn them.

Annalena Baerbock, President of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), reaffirmed the international body's commitment to the One China principle as established by UNGA Resolution 2758. The resolution, adopted by an overwhelming majority at the 26th session of the UNGA on 25 October 1971, confirms that there is only one China in the world, and that this "one China" is the People's Republic of China (PRC); that Taiwan is part of China and not a sovereign state, and therefore has no sovereign right to send representatives to the UN; and that the PRC represents all of China.

In an interview during her visit to China on 29–30 April, Baerbock said that as UNGA President, she has always ensured that UN member states adhere to the One China principle as a fundamental norm governing international relations. "We have a clear position defining the role of the President of the General Assembly in defending the decisions of the United Nations, including with regard to the People's Republic of China as the sole legitimate representative in the United Nations. Therefore, and this applies to all resolutions adopted by the General Assembly, I must ensure their compliance," Baerbock said.

UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 was adopted on 25 October 1971 and marked a turning point in the recognition of the PRC as the legitimate representative of China in the UN. Since then, the One China principle has been recognised by the overwhelming majority of countries worldwide and serves as the foundation for international relations with China. Baerbock's statement once again confirms that the UN consistently upholds this norm, despite attempts by some forces to challenge it.

As CCTV+ reports. The reaffirmation of the One China principle at such a high level strengthens international consensus and contributes to stability in the region.
