Turkmenistan and Afghanistan Agreed on Steps to Modernize the Ports of Aqina and Torghundi
On July 9, a meeting was held in Kabul between Mullah Mohammad Isa Sani, Acting Minister of Public Works of Afghanistan, and Khoja Ovezov, Ambassador of Turkmenistan. The parties focused on the practical implementation of joint transport, logistics, and infrastructure projects.
The talks provided an opportunity to thoroughly assess the current status and construction schedule of key cross-border sections:
Aqina-Andkhoy Line: The parties analyzed the progress of laying a 10-kilometer section of track, which is designed to increase the capacity of the northern transport corridor.
Torghundi Dry Port: Technical parameters for expanding the port area and constructing new terminal facilities were discussed. The modernization of this hub directly impacts the processing speed of cargo coming from Turkmenistan.
Meeting participants emphasized that completion of the current construction work will significantly increase the volume of mutual cargo transportation (transfers). Ashgabat and Kabul view the coordinated development of border infrastructure as a strategic foundation for creating sustainable trade and economic routes across the Eurasian region.
