When warplanes cross borders and bombs hit bridges and airports, even the most carefully crafted diplomatic agreements risk crumbling. Each new strike not only weakens the opponent but also erodes the trust that underpins a fragile peace. Iran is once again under attack, and the question is whether the interim agreement designed to end the protracted war can survive.

Early on Thursday, the US launched new intensive airstrikes on Iran, hitting an airport and key railway bridges. The move threatens the fragile interim agreement aimed at ending the war in the Middle East. According to local media, US forces struck Iranshahr airport, killing one person.

Strikes were also reported on the Ak-Teke-Khan railway bridge in Golestan Province in northeastern Iran. Tehran has not yet provided details on casualties or damage, and an investigation is ongoing. Iranian media reported explosions from Wednesday evening to early Thursday in key coastal areas, including the port cities of Bandar Abbas, Sirik, Chabahar and Bushehr. Sources indicate that strikes near Bushehr did not damage its nuclear power plant.

US Central Command said on Wednesday in a post on X that its forces had begun conducting additional strikes on Iran to further degrade its ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, marking the second consecutive day of US strikes. According to US media, the military struck two railway bridges in northern Iran with cruise missiles as part of the air campaign. This was the first time the US had struck Iranian infrastructure since the ceasefire agreement was reached on 8 April.

Meanwhile, Israeli Channel 12 reported that as tensions between the US and Iran escalate, Israel's defence ministry is preparing for a rapid deterioration of the situation. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened a high level security assessment meeting with Defence Minister Israel Katz. Israeli forces are on full alert for both defensive and offensive operations and will maintain close tactical coordination with US forces.

The interim US Iran agreement, reached on 8 April, had provided for a ceasefire and the opening of diplomatic channels. However, the fresh strikes cast doubt on its viability.

As CCTV+ reports. Observers fear the escalation could lead to a complete breakdown of talks and further destabilise the entire region.
