Europe's heatwave claims lives: 1,029 dead in Spain, 47°C in Portugal. Europe is being hit by a scorching heatwave, with high temperatures claiming lives and triggering urgent government warnings. When the mercury hits 47 degrees and the death toll reaches thousands, heat ceases to be just weather. It becomes a killer. Spain and Portugal — two countries now suffocating under the blaze — are throwing all their resources into fighting an element that shows no mercy. But even the strictest measures cannot bring back those already lost.

In Spain, an estimated 1,029 people died from the extreme heat in June, the highest monthly heat related death toll since the same month in 2015, according to Spain's daily mortality monitoring system (MoMo). This figure includes both those who died directly from heatstroke and those whose pre existing health conditions were exacerbated to a fatal degree. Spain's state meteorological agency (AEMET) reported that last month was the second hottest June on record in the country, with temperatures 3.2 degrees Celsius above the normal average.

In Portugal, to cope with the looming heat, authorities issued the highest weather alerts on Wednesday, tightened measures to prevent wildfires and expanded support for vulnerable groups. Interior Minister Luís Neves warned that temperatures could rise to 47 degrees Celsius in the coming days and urged the public to exercise extreme caution and avoid risky behaviour. He called for a ban on actions that could spark fires, including agricultural burning, open air fires, barbecues and the use of machinery capable of generating sparks. He also warned against discarding cigarette butts and parking vehicles in areas with dry vegetation.

1,029 deaths in a single month is not just a statistic. It is someone's mother, father, neighbour — people who did not survive the summer. Europe is heating up faster than any other part of the planet, and every new record is a reminder: climate change is not happening somewhere out there — it is here. In our homes, hospitals and streets. Spain and Portugal are not exceptions. They are warnings. And as authorities impose bans and meteorologists record new highs, all we can hope is that the warnings are heeded before the toll rises into the thousands.

As reported by CCTV+, the heat is expected to intensify, and authorities are urging citizens to take precautions, especially in the coming days.
