The death toll from two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela on 24 June has risen to 2,295, with the number of injured reaching 11,267, National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez said on Wednesday. When the ground stops shaking, another battle begins — the battle for life. 2,295 dead is not just a number.

It is mothers, fathers, children who will not return home. 11,267 injured is pain that will not fade in the coming weeks. But amid the chaos and destruction, there is another statistic: 6,461 people have been rescued. And behind every rescued life is someone's determination not to give up.

Rodríguez said that 6,461 people had been rescued by international and local rescue teams and volunteers. The government has mobilised more than 26,000 military personnel, police and firefighters for the search and rescue operation, with another 17,000 volunteers providing logistical support.

Rodríguez, who also heads the command centre for setting up temporary camps, called on medical workers, security personnel and firefighters to register on the Patria platform to address housing problems caused by the earthquakes. He said 25 temporary camps are in operation, including 13 in La Guaira, eight in Caracas, two in Miranda, one in Carabobo and one in Yaracuy. Authorities are taking swift action to equip the camps and transfer victims there.

The search and rescue operations and the transfer of victims involve 4,099 foreign rescuers, 153 search and rescue dogs and 49 escort vehicles. Since 24 June, 782 aftershocks have been recorded in Venezuela, although their frequency and magnitude have decreased. On Wednesday, acting President Delcy Rodríguez declared seven days of national mourning in memory of the victims.

The two earthquakes, both of magnitude over 7.0, struck on 24 June less than a minute apart, making them among the most destructive in Venezuela's history. The epicentre was near the coast, amplifying the damage. The worst hit state was La Guaira, as well as the capital Caracas. International rescue teams from several countries have arrived to provide assistance. Rescue efforts continue, though the chances of finding survivors diminish with each passing day. Authorities are urging citizens to take precautions due to ongoing aftershocks.

As reported by CCTV+, rescue operations continue, and the declared national mourning has become a symbol of grief and solidarity across the country.
