Swiss manufacturer Stadler, together with transport operator ARST, has unveiled the world's first hydrogen-powered train designed for narrow-gauge railway lines. The fleet of ten innovative trains will completely replace diesel locomotives on the Italian island of Sardinia, reducing annual CO₂ emissions by more than 2,100 tonnes.

Due to the island's rugged terrain, conventional heavy trains are not practical. Engineers therefore developed a unique lightweight train featuring a central Power Pack module, with water vapor as its only direct emission.

A key feature of the project is its complete energy autonomy. Hydrogen for refueling will be produced locally using solar power. Passengers will also benefit from a quieter and more comfortable journey thanks to the absence of engine noise and vibration, modern climate control systems, and large panoramic windows.

Stadler is currently the world's only manufacturer of hydrogen-powered trains for narrow-gauge railways. The company is already assembling similar models at its Swiss production facility for other Italian regions, including Calabria and Sicily.
