A Resolution on the Role of Neutrality for Peace Has Been Published in the Six Official UN Languages
United Nations General Assembly Resolution 80/262, "The role and significance of the policy of neutrality in maintaining and strengthening international peace, security, and sustainable development," initiated by Turkmenistan, has been officially published in all six official UN languages. The document was issued as an official resolution of the 80th session of the General Assembly under agenda item 62(b), dedicated to peacebuilding and peacekeeping, ensuring the widest possible dissemination and promotion of peace initiatives among all UN member states. This document is unique in that it was adopted by the General Assembly by consensus and became the first UN document ever approved under a separate, specially created agenda item entirely devoted to the phenomenon and practical role of neutrality. The translation and publication of the text in the six official UN languages completes the formal legal procedures following its unanimous approval by the international community.
The resolution aims to further strengthen the role of preventive diplomacy, mediation in dispute resolution, and long-term multilateral cooperation. The document also provides for the introduction of a number of new practical mechanisms under the auspices of the United Nations, designed to harness the potential of states' neutral status to ensure global security and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
