SCO — 25 years of a new world order: Wang Yi calls for the 'Shanghai Spirit' and global initiatives, Secretary General adopts a ten year strategy
25 years of mutual trust, equality and shared development. 2025 — the Tianjin SCO summit adopted a ten year development strategy. China's four global initiatives point the way. China is ready to share development opportunities and achieve mutually beneficial cooperation.
As reported by CCTV+, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Monday that the establishment of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) marked a new chapter in modern international relations. Speaking at a reception in Beijing marking the SCO's 25th anniversary, Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, said that SCO members have developed the Shanghai Spirit of mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation, respect for different civilizations and pursuit of common development, and have built a new type of international relations.
He noted that the four major global initiatives proposed by China, together with the vision of building a community with a shared future for humanity, have pointed the right direction for the entire world, and that the SCO should play a more significant role and set an example in promoting global peace, development, cooperation and mutual benefit. Wang Yi added that China is ready to share development opportunities with other SCO member states and achieve win win cooperation.
SCO Secretary General Nurlan Yermekbayev said that the 2025 SCO summit in Tianjin adopted the organization's development strategy for the next decade, which set an ambitious yet realistic and feasible course. Yermekbayev expressed hope that SCO members would make joint efforts to further improve the well being of their peoples and advance the cause of regional peace and development.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) was founded in 2001. It currently has nine member states (China, Russia, India, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran) and several observer nations. The Shanghai Spirit is its guiding principle: mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation, respect for cultural diversity. China's four global initiatives: the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, the Global Civilization Initiative, and the Initiative for a Global Community of Health for All.
A quarter of a century is a mature age for an organization. Over this period, the SCO has grown from a regional dialogue into a global platform where East and West, North and South sit at the same table. The Shanghai Spirit is not just rhetoric. It is an alternative to bloc thinking. In a world where old alliances are crumbling, the SCO offers a model: respect others' traditions, do not impose your own rules, seek benefit for all. Twenty five years is only the beginning. And when Wang Yi speaks of a community with a shared future for humanity, and Yermekbayev adopts a ten year strategy, it becomes clear: the SCO is not just celebrating an anniversary. It is building a future where power is measured not by tanks, but by cooperation.
