The King's Birthday is considered a national holiday in Britain. Although it is not a public holiday, it attracts large numbers of Londoners and tourists from around the world. People gather along the parade route to greet the monarch.

For many Britons, this day symbolizes not only the King's personal celebration but also national unity and respect for traditions and historical heritage. The grand military parade, Trooping the Colour, is a vibrant spectacle that showcases the country's ceremonial grandeur.

In London, this is one of the most spectacular events of the year, broadcast on television, uniting the country around the crown of the British Empire.

The date of her official holiday, usually a Saturday in June, is chosen by the monarch herself, and there is a rather curious historical reason behind this specific detail. The date of his official holiday, usually a Saturday in the blooming month of June, is chosen by the monarch himself, and this peculiar detail has a rather curious historical reason.

This year, by the King's decree, His Majesty's birthday was set for June 13. In Turkmenistan, the British Embassy, along with their numerous friends and colleagues, celebrated this anniversary, following tradition, outdoors in the picturesque grounds of the Ashgabat Golf Club.

The emerald lawns, stretching against the majestic foothills of the Kopetdag Mountains, always create a wonderful atmosphere for the famous royal garden receptions at Buckingham Palace, seamlessly blending British aristocratic charm with warm Turkmen hospitality.

However, on this very day, a dust storm erupted in the Turkmen capital from early morning. While calling it a "storm" would be an exaggeration, the dense blanket of dust, whipped across the sky by gusts of wind, certainly dampened the mood. However, by lunchtime, the sky cleared, and hope ignited that the outdoor celebration would still take place.

Although the weather did introduce some nuances. But more on that later...

And so, on a clear, serene evening on June 13, in the Turkmen capital, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Stephen Conlon and his wife, Ruta Conlon, welcomed numerous guests to the gala celebration of His Majesty King Charles III's birthday.

And now, why British monarchs, unlike ordinary people, have two birthdays. And in this too, as it turned out, His Majesty’s concern for the subjects of his kingdom was evident.

The celebration of the British sovereign's birthday has a profound historical significance, dating back to 1748, during the reign of King George II. It was then that the unique tradition of separating the monarch's actual birthday from the official, national celebration arose in Great Britain.

Because George II was born in cold and rainy November, he wisely decided to postpone the official celebrations to the sunny and blooming month of June, so that his subjects could fully enjoy the holiday outdoors.

Since then, regardless of the actual date of birth of the current ruler, the official birthday of the British monarch has been celebrated in early summer and is traditionally accompanied by a grand military parade in London and formal receptions at all British diplomatic missions around the world.

And in Ashgabat, Saturday evening was marked by an exquisite diplomatic reception that fully reflected these beautiful centuries-old traditions.

Guests at the evening included representatives of the Turkmen government, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other government agencies, heads of foreign diplomatic missions accredited in the country, heads of international organizations, business representatives, as well as renowned figures in science and culture, artists, and representatives of foreign and local media.

Among the guests was Madame Govher Governe, known to our readers, whose innate talent, hard work, and impeccable taste helped her become an internationally renowned haute couture designer, as ORIENT has repeatedly reported.

Govher (wife of Roman Gouverné, who served as Director of the French Institute at the Embassy in Turkmenistan from 2020 to 2025) enrolled in the prestigious Ecole Haute Couture de Paris after moving to France with her family.

The leadership of this prestigious European institution was so impressed by her original designs and impeccable tailoring that it didn't take long for her to offer her a teaching position at the school.

As it turned out, Govher was only in Turkmenistan for a few days and was very pleased to meet us. She shared that her husband and children constantly and warmly recall their days spent in Ashgabat, and they are delighted to send their regards to all readers of the ORIENT website.

In his welcoming remarks, Ambassador Stephen Conlon emphasized the high level and stable nature of bilateral relations between the UK and Turkmenistan, based on the principles of mutual respect and a shared interest in expanding humanitarian and economic dialogue.

The Ambassador drew a warm analogy between British royal culture and Turkmen traditions. He noted that the UK hosts the famous Royal Ascot horse race, and compared this passion for horses to the deep reverence for Akhal-Teke horses in Turkmenistan, who race swiftly, outrunning the wind.

Incidentally, Ashgabat, unlike Baku, Azerbaijan, has never been known for its particularly windy weather. But recently, climate change unexpectedly intervened during the ceremony, and after a slight gust of wind, the papers containing Stephen Conlon's speech fluttered from his hands.

In this unforeseen situation, the guests witnessed a wonderful example of instant diplomatic cooperation: US Ambassador to Turkmenistan Elizabeth Rood and UNICEF Representative in Turkmenistan Jalpa Ratna provided emergency assistance to their British counterpart, quickly collecting scattered pieces of paper across the emerald grass. How could such a difficult situation have been accomplished without their feminine sensitivity and professional composure?

After this amusing incident, the British diplomat, with true English composure, continued his speech, emphasizing cultural exchange and educational programs, including government scholarships that allow Turkmen students to pursue master's degrees at UK universities.

And finally, Stephen Conlon warmly thanked the Turkmen side for their assistance in organizing the celebration at such a magnificent venue in the capital.

…On behalf of the Turkmen government, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers for Economic Affairs Khodjamyrat Geldimyradov warmly welcomed the participants of the ceremony.

The Deputy Prime Minister expressed gratitude for the invitation and asked that his warmest congratulations and best wishes for peace, well-being, and continued prosperity be conveyed to His Majesty and all the people of the United Kingdom.

Deputy Prime Minister Hojamyrat Geldimyradov emphasized that Ashgabat highly values its friendly relations with the United Kingdom, which are currently based on a solid foundation of mutual respect, deep trust, and a commitment to developing a multifaceted partnership.

The two countries maintain a constructive political dialogue, and cooperation in trade, economic, investment, educational, cultural, and humanitarian spheres is successfully developing.

The Deputy Prime Minister called the visit of the National Leader of the Turkmen People and Chairman of the Khalk Maslakhaty of Turkmenistan to the United Kingdom in May of this year a crucial milestone in the modern history of bilateral relations.

During a personal meeting between Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and King Charles III, the two sides reaffirmed their mutual interest in deepening ties and their readiness to expand their long-term partnership.

Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Hojamyrat Geldimyradov noted that the Turkmenistan-British Trade and Industrial Council, which serves as an effective platform for expanding business contacts between representatives of the business communities, makes a significant practical contribution to this process.

The Turkmen side confirmed its readiness to systematically expand cooperation with the United Kingdom both bilaterally and within reputable international organizations.

…As for the outdoor celebration, it was truly colorful, lively, and memorable. Under the Ashgabat sky, guests were able to fully immerse themselves in the atmosphere of refined British culture. The reception program harmoniously combined classic protocol elements with relaxed social interaction on the club's green fields.

Throughout the evening, exquisite music was performed – melodies and songs, including the ever-living English rock, on whose revolutionary foundation all modern popular music is built. The songs performed ranged across genres and were flawlessly performed in a beautiful manner.

The event's hosts offered guests traditional English cuisine, refreshing cocktails, non-alcoholic drinks, and other beverages traditionally served at royal receptions in London.

This vibrant event not only paid tribute to the historical traditions of the United Kingdom but also provided an excellent opportunity to strengthen friendly ties between representatives of different countries in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

The general joy and merriment began with the traditional toast:

The King's Most Excellent Majesty!
