ORIENT | Politics. Russia Day, celebrated annually on June 12, is one of the most significant public holidays in the Russian Federation. Its history dates back to 1990, when the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the RSFSR was adopted.

This event marked an important step in the development of modern Russia as an independent democratic state. In 1992, the date was officially established as a holiday, and since 1994, it has been a national holiday.

Over time, Russia Day has acquired a deep symbolic meaning – it embodies the unity of a multinational people, pride in a rich historical heritage, and responsibility for the country's future.

For millions of Russians, this holiday is more than just a day off, but an opportunity to feel connected to the fate of their homeland, recall its glorious past, and pay tribute to the achievements of previous generations.

The significance of Russia Day is particularly evident in the context of the diversity of cultures, languages, and traditions that coexist harmoniously within the country. The Russian Federation unites over 190 peoples, each contributing to the overall palette of national identity.

The holiday serves as a reminder that Russia's strength lies in the unity of its citizens, in respect for the traditions of each ethnic group, and in a shared desire for prosperity. On this day, celebrations, concerts, exhibitions, patriotic events, and public festivities are held throughout the country, uniting people of different nationalities, ages, and professions.

Russia Day is also celebrated outside of Russia, particularly vigorously in countries with large Russian-speaking diasporas and in states with long-standing friendly relations with the Russian Federation. Embassies and consulates organize gala receptions, like the one held yesterday at the Yyldyz Hotel, cultural programs, and meetings with compatriots and representatives of local elites.

These events not only strengthen ties between peoples but also promote a positive image of Russia internationally, demonstrating openness to dialogue and a willingness to cooperate in a wide range of areas.

Ashgabat also celebrated this holiday. The day before, employees of the Russian Embassy in Turkmenistan gathered at the fashionable Yyldyz Hotel to celebrate Russia Day with friends.

The participation of representatives of the Turkmen government, ambassadors of friendly states, Russian companies and their Turkmen counterparts, and cultural and artistic figures in the event underscores the depth and diversity of Russian-Turkmen relations.

Currently, Turkmen-Russian relations are built on the principles of mutual respect, equality, and consideration of each other's interests. Political dialogue between the countries is stable, and leaders—President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov, Chairman of the Khalk Maslakhaty Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, and President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin—regularly exchange visits and maintain high-level contacts.

Russia is one of Turkmenistan's key trade and economic partners. Cooperation encompasses such areas as energy, transport, industry, agriculture, and infrastructure. Russian companies participate in major projects in Turkmenistan, contributing to economic modernization and the creation of new jobs.

In turn, Turkmenistan, with its significant natural gas reserves, plays a vital role in ensuring the region's energy security, and its strategic location makes the country a key link in the development of transport corridors between Europe and Asia.

Equally significant are the cultural and humanitarian ties between the two peoples. The Russian language remains an important means of communication, and Russian educational institutions welcome Turkmen students, nurturing a generation of specialists capable of strengthening bilateral relations in the future.

Cultural exchanges, joint festivals, exhibitions, and tours of artistic groups foster a better understanding of each other's traditions and values. Ashgabat and other cities in Turkmenistan regularly host events dedicated to Russian culture, and Turkmen art finds a warm welcome in Russia.

The festive evening at the Yyldyz Hotel was a living testimony to these multifaceted ties. It brought together representatives of government, business, culture, and the public – all who value the friendship between Russia and Turkmenistan and strive for its further development.

Addressing the guests, Ivan Volynkin, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Turkmenistan, emphasized the profound symbolism of the holiday, which embodies the unity of a multinational people and pride in a great historical heritage. The head of the Russian diplomatic mission emphasized that in the current era of global change and geopolitical upheaval, Russia continues to confidently defend historical truth and traditional spiritual and moral values.

"On the global stage, our approaches have always been distinguished by the fulfillment of our obligations, fidelity to our word, and strict adherence to international law," the diplomat stated.

Paraphrasing a well-known quote by the iconic Sergei Bodrov Jr., Ivan Volynkin added that true strength lies in truth, and supported this point with a precise Turkmen proverb: "Be truthful and you will become a rose; be false and you will become ashes."

The Russian side expressed deep respect for Turkmenistan's permanent neutral status, which is a key factor in stability and geopolitical balance in Central Asia. The Ambassador reiterated the high dynamics of bilateral contacts this year: from Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov's participation in the Russia-Islamic World International Forum in Kazan in May of this year to the recent visit of Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin to Ashgabat for the CIS Heads of Government Council. Another important event lies ahead: in October, the hospitable Turkmen soil will host a summit of CIS heads of state, with the participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The diplomatic service is already actively preparing for it.

On behalf of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, National Leader of the Turkmen People, and all the people of Turkmenistan, Deputy Prime Minister Nokerguly Atagulyev warmly congratulated his Russian friends and colleagues. The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that in this new historical period, interstate relations have become as effective and trusting as possible.

A strong legal framework, encompassing all aspects of cooperation, provides a solid foundation for the implementation of large-scale strategic plans. The economic partnership is clearly demonstrated by the active participation of major Russian enterprises in modernizing the Turkmen economy, creating new industries, and developing infrastructure.

"The successes achieved in areas such as trade, investment, energy, transport and logistics, and agriculture serve as an effective platform for strengthening bilateral relations," stated Nokerguly Atagulyev, noting the significant contribution of the Intergovernmental Turkmen-Russian Commission on Economic Cooperation to expanding productive business dialogue.

The speakers devoted special attention to the cultural and humanitarian sphere—a living bridge connecting the hearts of millions of people. The Russian language in Turkmenistan remains a vital means of interethnic communication and intercultural dialogue.

The Turkmen Deputy Prime Minister cited specific, significant examples of this spiritual kinship for Ashgabat. These include the enduring popularity of the A.S. Pushkin State Russian Drama Theater. The scientific and educational sector remains an equally important priority: for twenty years now, the Joint Russian-Turkmen Secondary School named after A.S. Pushkin has been successfully operating in the Turkmen capital, and thousands of young Turkmen citizens annually receive high-quality higher education at leading Russian universities, forming a solid intellectual foundation for future partnership.

The festive evening at the Yyldyz Hotel was celebrated in an atmosphere of genuine warmth and hospitality. At the festive table, representatives of government, business, and the creative intelligentsia of the two countries not only congratulated each other but also actively discussed new joint projects, proving by personal example that the strongest interstate alliances are built on a solid foundation of mutual trust, shared interests, and genuine, time-tested friendship.
