On behalf of the people, the Government of Turkmenistan, and himself, the head of state expressed sincere sympathy and support at this difficult time to the families, relatives, and friends of the victims, and wished a speedy recovery to all those affected by the natural disaster.
A catastrophic magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck early in the morning of June 8 off the southern coast of the Philippine island of Mindanao, becoming the strongest to hit the country in 36 years. The brunt of the disaster struck the province of Sarangani and the major port city of General Santos, where partial and complete collapses of commercial buildings, schools, and medical facilities were reported, as well as debris on key highways. According to official figures from national civil defense agencies, the death toll has already exceeded 40 people, hundreds of residents have been injured, and tens of thousands have been forced to evacuate coastal areas due to the temporary threat of a tsunami and ongoing powerful aftershocks.
