On Thursday, the United States, Mexico and Canada announced coordinated public health measures for individuals arriving from African regions at the highest risk of Ebola virus infection.

According to a joint statement from Canada’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the coordinated approach is aimed at protecting citizens, as well as the millions of visitors, fans, athletes and tourists expected to arrive for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The three North American countries said the measures are also intended to maintain travel and trade across their borders.

Canada has banned entry to residents of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda and South Sudan for 90 days. The measure took effect on Wednesday, and those arriving from these countries must observe a 21-day quarantine.

Mexico’s largest airline, Aeromexico, announced on social media on Friday that travellers who have visited Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo or South Sudan in the previous 21 days will be prohibited from entering Mexico by air.

Mexican low-cost carriers Viva Aerobus and Volaris, which operate several international flights, have also announced similar restrictions for a period of 60 days.

The FIFA World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada and kicks off on June 11.
