Weather conditions in Turkmenistan this week will be unstable, with sharp temperature fluctuations. The country will be influenced by the interaction of cold air masses moving in from the north and warmer subtropical flows from the south. The most pronounced temperature contrast is expected between the northern and southern regions, according to a meteorological journal.
In the northern parts of the country, from Tuesday to Thursday, daytime temperatures will not exceed +10°C, generally ranging between +1°C and +6°C, while nighttime temperatures may drop to -10°C. At the same time, in the south, temperatures will rise to +20°C on Monday and Tuesday and may locally reach +25°C on Thursday.
At the beginning of the week, a Balkan cyclone will move along a low-latitude trajectory through the North Caucasus, the Lower Volga region, and further south of Siberia. On Monday, warm air from Iran will begin to flow into Turkmenistan from the south within the cyclone’s warm sector.
The warmest weather is expected in the Ahal and Mary velayats, as well as in the southern part of the Balkan velayat. Daytime temperatures there will range from +15°C to +20°C, locally up to +22°C. In northern areas, where northwesterly and westerly winds will prevail, temperatures will be only +2°C to +7°C. Short-term rain showers are expected in most regions.
On Tuesday, as the cyclone moves away, a Scandinavian anticyclone will spread into its rear, causing a sharp but short-lived cooling. The northern regions will be affected most strongly, while changes in the south will be less pronounced.
In the Balkan velayat, daytime temperatures will range from +1°C to +6°C, reaching up to +12°C in the far south. In the Ahal velayat, temperatures will gradually decrease throughout the day: locally up to +19°C during the day, dropping to +8°C–+13°C by evening. In the Mary and Lebap velayats, daytime warmth of +15°C–+20°C will persist, with the cold front arriving closer to night. In the Dashoguz velayat, daytime temperatures will range from -1°C to +4°C, with a possible drop to 0°C–-5°C in the evening.
Precipitation is forecast in all regions on Tuesday: rain turning to snow in the Dashoguz velayat, mixed rain and snow in the Balkan velayat, and rain elsewhere, with thunderstorms possible in the Mary and Lebap velayats.
The peak of the cold spell will occur on the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. In northern Turkmenistan, temperatures will fall to -5°C–-10°C; in the Balkan velayat, locally to -2°C–-7°C; and in northern Lebap to 0°C–-5°C. Frosty air will not reach the other regions.
As the anticyclone shifts northeastward, airflows will change direction, increasing the inflow of warmer air into southern regions. On Wednesday, temperatures in the far south of Turkmenistan will rise to +12°C–+17°C. In the Ahal velayat, temperatures will range from +3°C–+8°C in the north and west to +16°C in the southeast. The north will remain cool at 0°C–+5°C. Precipitation is possible almost everywhere except the Dashoguz velayat; in northern Ahal and Lebap, rain may mix with wet snow.
From Thursday onward, a weak-pressure-gradient low-pressure field will form over the region, leading to a stronger inflow of warm air from the south. In southern areas, nighttime temperatures will remain at +10°C–+15°C, while daytime conditions will become anomalously warm. In eastern Ahal and the Mary velayat, temperatures will rise to +20°C–+25°C. The north will remain cool at +2°C–+7°C. Local rain showers and thunderstorms are possible.
