 WHO and Turkmenistan Strengthen Efforts Against Chronic Respiratory Diseases

The week-long technical mission of experts from the WHO Regional Office for Europe (WHO/Europe) took place in Ashgabat from 10 to 15 October 2025. The visit focused on enhancing the effectiveness of prevention and treatment of chronic respiratory diseases.

WHO experts worked closely with national specialists. The main goal of the mission was to review and update clinical guidelines for COPD and bronchial asthma, aligning them with the latest global standards.

During the mission, new patient-centered clinical pathways were developed to improve the quality of diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of these conditions.

WHO specialists also conducted intensive training sessions in pulmonology and allergology. The trainings were held at the International Scientific and Clinical Center of Physiology, as well as in pilot medical institutions in Ashgabat and Turkmenabat (Lebap region). The purpose of the training was to strengthen local capacity in quality control and monitoring of respiratory care effectiveness.

The mission concluded with a meeting of the national working group, which defined further steps for scaling up successful practices across the country. This reaffirmed WHO’s commitment to supporting Turkmenistan in its efforts to combat noncommunicable diseases.
