The President of Turkmenistan announced a number of initiatives from the UN podium.
25.09.2025 | 01:50 |During his participation in the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov delivered a keynote speech on global security, peace, and development. In his address to the international community, the head of state outlined Turkmenistan's position on key international issues and put forward a number of specific initiatives.
Call for a new world order
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov emphasized that the current state of international relations requires a decisive shift to coordinated dialogue between states and organizations. He stated that the primary task of the UN is to maintain peace and security, as well as preserve the legal foundations of the international order. Turkmenistan places great hope in the 80th session of the General Assembly in shaping a strong and balanced global architecture.
The power of neutrality
Recognizing its responsibility as a permanently neutral state, Turkmenistan proposed including a separate item on "Neutrality for Peace and Security" in the agenda of the 80th session. The country considers neutrality one of the most effective mechanisms for ensuring stability and sustainable development. In this regard, Turkmenistan will submit a draft resolution on "The Role and Significance of the Policy of Neutrality in Maintaining and Strengthening International Peace, Security, and Sustainable Development."
Taking this opportunity, the President thanked the international community for recognizing Turkmenistan's permanent neutrality 30 years ago. He emphasized that this historic event shaped the country's entire foreign policy.
Global dialogue
Turkmenistan outlined its vision for the future world order in several ambitious proposals:
World Summit on a Culture of Peace and Trust. This summit plans to develop a global Code of International Trust. This document, based on the principles of respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, is intended to become a universal foundation for building relations between countries.
Central Asia: A Space of Peaceful Coexistence. Turkmenistan proposed holding an International Forum to revive the region's historical mission as a civilizational bridge between East and West and transform it into a space for dialogue and cooperation.
International Mediation Day. The proclamation of such a day will highlight the importance of diplomacy and neutral platforms in conflict prevention and resolution.
Year of International Law. Turkmenistan has initiated the declaration of 2028 as the Year of International Law, which will be an important step in strengthening the international legal foundations for peace and cooperation.
Proposals in the field of economics, ecology, and technology
In addition to diplomatic initiatives, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov focused on economic and environmental issues in his speech:
UN Decade of Sustainable Transport. It was proposed to proclaim the period 2026–2035 as the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport to consolidate efforts to develop transport corridors.
Energy Security: Turkmenistan will submit a draft resolution on "The Key Role of Reliable and Stable Energy Connectivity in Ensuring Sustainable Development."
Digital Integration. To ensure balanced digital development, the head of Turkmenistan proposed creating a Global Platform for Digital Integration based on the principles of equality and trust.
Regional Center to Combat Desertification. The creation of such a center for Central Asian countries has been initiated.
Caspian Environmental Forum. As part of the Caspian Environmental Initiative, proposed at the 78th session of the General Assembly, it was proposed to hold the Caspian Environmental Forum in 2026.
International Day of Multilingual Diplomacy. The proclamation of such a day will promote intercultural dialogue and support multilingualism.
Strategic Cooperation with the UN
The President emphasized that cooperation with the UN remains a strategic priority for Turkmenistan. He called the Organization the only universal platform that must remain the guarantor of peace, development, and security.
