VK introduces MAX: A new-generation messenger with expansive capabilities
16.07.2025 | 19:30 |VK has announced the launch of the beta version of its new messenger, MAX. This project is positioned as a future universal digital assistant, aiming to integrate communication functions, financial transactions, and access to a multitude of services. The initiative is inspired by the success of the Chinese application WeChat, which has transformed into a key tool for hundreds of millions of users.
The MAX messenger has been developed as part of the Russian authorities' pursuit of digital sovereignty. The project has received state support, been included in the registry of domestic software, and starting September 2025, it will become mandatory for pre-installation on all new smartphones in Russia. As of June 30, 2025, the number of registered MAX users has exceeded 1 million.
At its current beta stage, MAX offers users not only standard messenger functions (chats, calls) but also a range of advanced capabilities. These include Sber's free AI assistant, GigaChat 2.0, which can generate text and images, as well as process audio and video. The messenger allows for sending files up to 4 GB in size, conducting money transfers via the Faster Payments System (SBP), and interacting with chatbots and mini-applications.
In the long term, VK plans to significantly expand MAX's functionality. Expected new features include integration with "Gosuslugi" (Public Services), the creation of a full-fledged built-in payment system, the addition of mobility services and its own marketplace, and the expansion of tools for businesses. The messenger is available for download on all major mobile and desktop platforms; however, registration is currently only possible for users with Russian or Belarusian phone numbers.
