The Governor of Bali, Wayan Koster, has signed new regulations, which will come into effect on March 25, 2025.
The principal changes pertain to tourist conduct, attire, and adherence to local traditions. All foreign nationals are obligated to respect the culture and customs of the island, which includes wearing modest clothing, particularly when visiting sacred sites. The authorities will also strictly penalize violations such as the use of offensive language, conducting business without authorization, and environmental pollution.
Furthermore, tourists will be required to pay a tourist levy of 150,000 Indonesian Rupiah (approximately 9 US dollars) and utilize the services of licensed guides for visiting places of interest.
In the lead-up to the sacred Day of Silence, Nyepi, the authorities are particularly urging everyone to observe the established norms, and residents of the island may report violations through a dedicated hotline.
The objective of these new measures is to elevate the quality of the tourism industry and safeguard the cultural heritage of the region.
