13.02.2025 | 16:35 |The first-ever Olympic Esports Games will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 2027. This event marks a significant milestone in the development of esports on the international stage.
Originally slated for 2025, the competition was rescheduled due to logistical challenges. This decision was reached at the 142nd session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in July 2024.
A meeting between Thomas Bach and Saudi Arabian Minister of Sport, Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal in Riyadh played a crucial role in shaping the new strategy for the Games. A six-person committee was established to determine the disciplines that will be featured in the Games.
In organizing the Games, the International Olympic Committee is collaborating with the Saudi Arabian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and the Esports World Cup Foundation. This partnership aims to bridge the gap between esports and traditional sports, while also creating opportunities for players and teams representing their countries.
Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal noted that there is a growing interest in esports in Saudi Arabia, and the country aspires to become a global hub for the gaming industry by 2030.
