Turkmenistan participates in the EU–Central Asia civil society forum

Representatives of civil society from Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan gathered at the forum to discuss pressing challenges facing Central Asia and to exchange experiences in developing civil society. This was reported by Caravan.kz.

The EU Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Aleshka Simkic, emphasized that the forum focuses on key topics such as human rights, climate change, and women's participation in public life. These are not just theoretical discussions but a dynamic policy-making process in which civil society plays a central role.

Particular attention was given to climate change issues, including droughts, floods, and water resource shortages. These challenges require coordinated regional efforts to develop effective solutions. The role of women in political decision-making was also a key topic of discussion. According to Aleshka Simkic, women's influence in Central Asian societies is steadily growing, and participants explored measures to further support their active involvement in public and political life.

Another crucial issue addressed at the forum was the support for civil society, with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) playing a key role in its implementation. "Our organization is focused on providing operational tools and implementing projects that support civil society. The forum also discusses the creation of working groups that will operate over the next four years, based on the priorities of Central Asian civil society," said Gürel Gürkan, Director of the Austrian Multi-Country Office of UNOPS.

Gürkan further stated that the EU has allocated €4.5 million to support civil society initiatives in Central Asia. Gürkan highlighted the importance of active civil society participation in shaping public policy, particularly in key areas such as youth engagement and support for women and children.

Environmental Challenges and Security Issues A major topic at the forum was the discussion of safety concerns related to large infrastructure projects and their environmental risks. Gürkan noted that UNOPS places special emphasis on ensuring the safety of nuclear power plants in the region, providing both financial and expert support to minimize risks and ensure compliance with international standards.

The EU–Central Asia Civil Society Forum continues to serve as a vital platform for discussing political, social, and economic issues in the region. Aleshka Simkic stressed that no effective policy can be developed without civil society’s involvement, underscoring the need to support initiatives that contribute to the sustainable development of Central Asia.
