 Turkmenistan and Somalia discuss cooperation in the field of education

On December 23, a video conference meeting was held between professors and lecturers from the Turkmen State University named after Magtymguly, the S.A. Niyazov Turkmen Agricultural University, the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, and higher educational institutions of the Federal Republic of Somalia. The discussion focused on environmental protection and water diplomacy.

During the meeting, Sheker Ashyrmyradowa, the head of the Department of Ecology at Magtymguly Turkmen State University and the coordinator of the "Strengthening Higher Education in the Water Sector to Ensure Air Stability and Security in Central Asia" (HWCA) project, funded by the European Commission's Erasmus+ program, gave a presentation on the topic "The Importance of Higher Education and International Cooperation in Adapting to Climate Change in Central Asia". In her presentation, it was emphasized that higher education serves as a crucial platform for preparing specialists to address issues related to climate change. Specialized programs and projects in areas such as ecology, water management, energy efficiency, agriculture, and economic adaptation can provide solutions focused on regional challenges. The higher education system aims not only to train specialists in climatology, sustainable development, and environmental management but also to prepare them to address transboundary issues.

The head of the Department of Hydrometeorology at Turkmen State University named after Magtymguly, Candidate of Geographical Sciences Gapurjan Hamrayev, gave a presentation on the topic "Study of the Movement of Sand Dunes in Western Turkmenistan", providing an extensive overview of the work being carried out in this area. In particular, he highlighted research on modern exodynamical processes and the formation of relief, which are essential for successfully addressing issues related to the planned use of natural resources in the Western Turkmen Depression. In this context, studying the movement of shifting dunes in the region is deemed highly relevant.

Several presentations were also made by representatives from the Federal Republic of Somalia. Dr. Sharif Osman, the director of the Institute of Peace, Water, and Environmental Studies at Mogadishu University, spoke on the topic "Somalia’s Water Diplomacy: Existing Challenges and Missed Opportunities". Abdilatif Hussein Omar, a lecturer from the Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Management at Somalia National University, presented on "Somalia’s Environment and Climate Change: Collaborative Efforts Between Government, Civil Society, and Academia". Dr. Abdirahman Ismail Dakane from the Faculty of Engineering at Mogadishu University spoke on "Integrated Water Resource Management in the Juba-Shabelle Basin: The Key to Sustainability and Regional Development". Lastly, Muhammed Okash from the Institute of Climate and Environmental Studies at SIMAD University presented on "The Role of Higher Education in the Fight Against Climate Change in Somalia".
