"Turkmengaz" is negotiating with investors in 2 and 3 stages of the Galkynysh deposit development

At the plenary meeting of the International Conference "Oil and GAZ Turkmenistan" (OGT -2024), the State Minister - Chairman of the State Council "Turkmengaz" Maksat Babaev spoke about the current and subsequent stages of the development of the Galkynysh field - the world's largest deposit of natural gas on land, which reserves together with the nearby located Yashlar and Garakel deposits are estimated at 27.4 trillion cubic meters.

The phased development of this field is designed for decades ahead, and each stage, in turn, is mastered in the context of specific projects with a focus on long -term cooperation. Currently, Galkynysh is at the stage of experimental and industrial operation as part of the first stage of development.

“Turkmengaz” Group of Companies conducts active negotiations with international investors at the second and third stage of development, and we expect a breakthrough in this matter until the end of the first quarter of the next year,” Maksat Babaev said.

The Turkmenistan-China main gas pipeline, put into operation at the end of 2009, which includes three parallel lines (A, B and C), which run along the Turkmenistan-Uzbekistan-Kazakhstan-China route, is a striking example of mutually beneficial transnational cooperation.

Gas consumption in China is growing. According to previously reached agreements, the supply of Turkmen natural gas to China should increase to 65 billion cubic meters a year after entering the fourth line of the gas pipeline. The route of the new, 4th line to the PRC will be laid from the border of Turkmenistan along the territory of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.

To ensure the planned volumes of supplies in the PRC, an additional 25 billion cubic meters of gas per year is planned to commission the second stage of the development of the Galkynysh field. In addition to the export of natural gas to China, Turkmenistan also exports gas to Uzbekistan. Since the beginning of 2024, 1.6 billion m3 of natural gas was exported, Maksat Babaev said.

He also noted that recently, on October 19, a memorandum of understanding in the field of energy cooperation between the “Turkmengaz” State Concern and the Ministry of Electric power of the Republic of Iraq was signed. In accordance with the memorandum, swap supplies through Iran to the Republic of Iraq are expected.

As part of the first stage in the development of the Galkynysh field, Petrofac, CNPC and Hyundai Engineering have equipped objects to prepare commodity gas. At this stage, the CNPC company Chuanqing Drilling Engineering Company Limited (CCDC) drilled 22 operational wells. This year, CCDC completed the construction of three particularly complex wells, which are located in the eastern part of the first stage.

To ensure the planned volumes of supplies to the PRC of additional 25 billion cubic meters of gas per year, it is planned to commission the second stage of the development of the Galkynysh field. Currently, negotiations and coordination of the details of the contract on the beginning of the drilling of wells and the arrangement of the second stage are at the final stage.
