 Turkmen delegation meets with IAEA Director Rafael Grossi in Vienna

On Wednesday, September 18, the Turkmen delegation, led by Deputy Foreign Minister Myahri Byashimova, taking part in the 68th session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency, met with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.

During the meeting, special attention was paid to the peaceful use of nuclear energy in such areas as medicine, agriculture, environmental protection and water resources management, according to a press release from the Turkmen Foreign Ministry.

Among the most important areas, cooperation in the fight against cancer was named. In this regard, the IAEA ImPACT program for monitoring joint actions, implemented in Turkmenistan, was noted. An exchange of views took place on the development of the IAEA Framework Program for Cooperation with Turkmenistan.

As part of the visit to Vienna, Myahri Byashimova also met with Robert Floyd, Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO).

The parties discussed prospects for cooperation, including raising awareness of the CTBT among young people, training, participation of national experts in seminars and trainings organized by the CTBTO, as well as providing technical support.

This week, from 16 to 20 September, the Vienna International Centre in Austria is hosting the 68th session of the IAEA General Conference, during which high-ranking officials and representatives of IAEA Member States are considering a range of issues.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Myahri Byashimova, speaking at the plenary session, noted that thanks to Turkmenistan's active cooperation with the IAEA, a practice of holding consultations at various levels on important areas has been established. All the efforts that Turkmenistan is making indicate a desire to strengthen cooperation with the Agency in promising areas. It is also expected that key tasks will be implemented, such as capacity building and improvement of regulatory and coordination work.
