Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan discussed the development of the eastern direction of the North-South corridor
12.08.2024 | 16:50 |Director General of the Agency for Transport and Communications under the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan Mammetkhan Chakiyev and Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan Serik Zhumangarin held a bilateral meeting to discuss the prospects for cooperation in the transport sector.
Both countries are actively cooperating in the development of the eastern direction of the North-South corridor, which passes through Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, ensuring the transit of goods to Pakistan and further to India.
A roadmap was signed in July 2024 between Kazakhstan, Russia, Iran and Turkmenistan on the synchronous development of the North-South corridor, a decision was agreed on the use of the western branch of the Trans-Afghan Railway. Kazakhstan expressed its readiness to participate together with Turkmenistan and Afghanistan in the construction of sections of the Afghan railway Turgundi-Herat-Kandahar-Spin-Buldak in terms of ensuring the transportation of track superstructure materials, sleepers, rails and fasteners of Kazakh production.
The meeting also discussed the nuances of the construction of the Turgundi-Herat railway and the possibility of activating cargo deliveries in the direction of China via Turgundi. The parties noted the mutual work to create competitive tariff conditions along all joint corridors China-Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran and along the North-South route, where the Russian Federation, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan agreed to create a single logistics operator on the eastern branch for seamless cargo transportation, according to a statement from the press service of the Kazakh Prime Minister.
