Participants of the Academy of Preventive Diplomacy learned about the use of AI in the work of the UN

Participants of the Academy of Preventive Diplomacy of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) took part in an online session on the topic “Innovation and artificial intelligence (AI) in the service of peace.”

The Head of the Innovation Section of the Policy and Mediation Division of the UN Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (UNDPPA), Martin Welisch, introduced participants to the UN Policy 2.0 “Quintet for Change”, which focuses on more robust capabilities for data processing and analytics, innovation and digital transformation, strategic forecasting, behavioral sciences, performance and results orientation.

He also highlighted the latest ways artificial intelligence and innovation are being applied to the work of the UN, Secretariat, field missions and agencies.

The students consolidated their theoretical knowledge with practical exercises, which helped them evaluate the pros and cons of AI when analyzing political speeches. This exercise highlighted the need to regulate and develop existing AI tools in the future.
