The formation of a sustainable tourism system in Turkmenistan was discussed by President Serdar Berdimuhamedov with Secretary General of the UN World Tourism Organization Zurab Pololikashvili. He arrived in Ashgabat to participate in the international conference “Main directions and potential of tourism development in Turkmenistan”, which is designed to increase the attention of the world community to our country.
Turkmenistan has been a member of UNWTO since 1993 and has accumulated useful experience of cooperation for more than 30 years. Nevertheless, not all opportunities in this area are being used, said Serdar Berdimuhamedov and called for more effective cooperation.
The President drew attention to the natural and climatic conditions, great historical and cultural potential, rich national traditions and modern infrastructure for the travel industry as the main factors of tourism development in the country.
Turkmenistan has a number of unique sites listed in the Guinness Book of Records, as well as historical monuments of Kunyaurgench, Ancient Merv and Nisa, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. There are interesting places for eco–tourism – in the Kopetdag mountains, the Garagum desert, the valleys of the Amu Derya, Koytendag, on the shores of the Caspian Sea. There is a modernized sanatorium and resort network for recreational tourism.
This year, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) decided to abandon the abbreviation and adopted a new name and brand: UN Tourism/UN Tourism. Improving human well-being, protecting the environment, stimulating economic development and promoting international harmony are key goals that form the fundamental essence of the UN Tourism.
The new logo of the organization is schematically designed in the form of a moving human figure. This dramatic evolution of the former globe symbol reflects the Organization’s emphasis on the dynamic nature of tourism and on putting people first.
