UNDP Turkmenistan Celebrates International Women's Day with Student Competition on “Women Scientists Leading Climate Action”

As part of the celebration of International Women's Day, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Turkmenistan organized an intellectual competition "Brain Ring" for students of Turkmenistan. The competition on the theme " Women Scientists: leaders in the fight against climate change" was held on March 2, 2024, at the UN Building in Ashgabat.

The event, which was organized within the framework of two joint UNDP projects funded by Global Environment Facility (GEF): “Conservation and Sustainable Management of Land Resources and High Nature Value Ecosystems in the Aral Sea Basin for Multiple Benefits” and "Sustainable Cities in Turkmenistan: Integrated Green Urban Development in Ashgabat and Avaza,” gathered students from various educational institutions of Turkmenistan.

The intellectual contest served as a platform to promote the leading role of women and girls in climate change adaptation and mitigation actions, share knowledge and experience in environmental protection, and encourage environmentally sustainable lifestyles among youth in support of national efforts to combat climate change.

“UNDP recognizes the vital role of youth in the fight against climate change,” – said Mr. Tomica Paovic, UNDP Officer-in-Charge in Turkmenistan. “We believe that young women scientists can play an important role in finding solutions to climate change and moving everyone towards a sustainable future for all.”

The Grand Prix prize in the intellectual contest was awarded to the students of the Oguzhan University of Engineering Technologies. The first place was taken by the team from the Turkmen State University named after Magtymguly. Second place was secured by students from the Yagshigeldi Kakayev International University of Oil and Gas. The teams from the Turkmen State Architectural and Construction Institute and the S.A. Niyazov Turkmen Agricultural University shared the third place. Additionally, the team from the Institute of Engineering and Technical Communications of Turkmenistan was recognized in the category of "Innovation and Creativity". Each winning team was awarded certificates and prizes from UNDP in Turkmenistan.
