Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurzhan Nurzhigitov discussed cooperation in saving the Caspian Sea and the Aral Sea with the EU Special Representative in Central Asia Terhi Hakala.

The Special Representative stated the desire of the EU countries to cooperate with Kazakhstan on issues of water conservation. In particular, they talked about the new Water Code being developed by the Ministry and plans to create an international water and energy consortium in Central Asia.

Nurzhan Nurzhigitov noted that the EU countries are supporting the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, and also spoke about the second stage of the lake restoration project, the implementation of which should begin next year.

The Minister also expressed interest in the participation of the European Union in the initiative to preserve the Caspian Sea within the framework of cooperation with the Scientific Research Institute for the Study of the Caspian Sea, work on the creation of which is currently actively underway, according to the agency's website.
