The National Climate Change Strategy adopted in 2012 is the starting point for Turkmenistan’s full involvement in the global climate agenda, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov said, setting out our country’s positions at the COP-28 Summit in Dubai.
The next logical step was Turkmenistan’s accession to the Paris Climate Agreement. In 2019, a new version of the National Climate Change Strategy was approved in this regard. The document is inclusive and includes an expanded list of measures to adapt almost all key sectors of the economy and social sphere to new requirements, the head of state noted.
As reported in the news release of the Turkmen State Television, Serdar Berdimuhamedov stressed that special attention is being paid to the fuel and energy complex, where a lot of work is being done to reduce emissions through the utilization of associated petroleum gas and reduce losses during transportation of natural gas.
Turkmenistan is aware of the need to work purposefully at the international and national levels to ensure progress in the fight against climate change and its consequences. The Head of state called the country’s contribution to international efforts to reduce methane emissions one of the most important aspects.
Serdar Berdimuhamedov announced Turkmenistan’s accession to the Global Methane Commitment, He also welcomed the Declaration on Climate and Health, the Emirati Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Sustainable Food Systems and Combating Climate Change, the Initiative to create the COP-28 Coalition for a Multi-level Partnership with High Ambitions to Combat Climate Change.
