K-POP: The remaining members of BTS are also joining the army

The four members of the South Korean group BTS - RM (Kim Namjoon), Jimin, V (aka Kim Taehyung) and Jungkook - have initiated the process of fulfilling their military service obligations. BIGHIT MUSIC's agency confirmed the news in an official statement on the Weverse platform.

“We would like to inform our fans that Namjoon, Jimin, Taehyung and Jungkook have initiated the military enlistment process. The artists are preparing to perform their military duties. We will inform you with further updates in due course,” the statement said.

“We ask that you continue to love and support Namjoon, Jimin, Taehyung and Jungkook until they complete their military service and return safely. Our company will make every effort to support our artists,” the group’s representatives added.

Currently, three other members, Jin, J-Hope and Suga, are serving their mandatory military service. Jin, the eldest member of the group, was the first to enlist in the military on December 13, 2022, withdrawing his deferment request. J-Hope followed suit on April 18. Both are enlisted on active duty.

Suga became the third member to enlist on September 22, following the end of his first solo world tour, Suga Agust D Tour. However, he began his service as a social worker, probably because he had shoulder surgery in 2020.

The group has been on hiatus since June 2022, with members continuing to pursue individual activities until a reunion expected in 2025. Meanwhile, RM, Jimin, V and Jungkook released their solo albums.

Military service is required by law for all men in South Korea under the age of 28.
