A plant was found in Turkmenistan, which was considered to have disappeared on the territory of the country
31.07.2023 | 14:54 |In the south-west of Turkmenistan, after 20 years of searching, a plant species that was previously considered to have fallen out of the flora of Turkmenistan was found — wild German medlar. She was found in a remote mountainous area.
Scientists claim that in the last century this fruit plant grew in small groups in the Gyuen gorge near the Chandyr River, which is located in the Magtymguly district of the Balkan region, the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reports.
Due to the poor knowledge and extreme rarity, the plant was not included in any of the three issues of the Red Book of Turkmenistan. However, Russian botanists did not abandon attempts to revive this wild plant in its natural habitat. After attempts to grow it in the Botanical Garden, it was decided to graft medlar on related rooted seedlings of pear and hawthorn.
As a result, in 2020, the first fruits were obtained. After the appearance of sensational news for the scientific community, a group of experts on wild fruit crops of the National Institute of Deserts, Flora and Fauna of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan will go to the site of the find.
