Oriented on making people closer

President Serdar Berdimuhamedov signed the Law "On Mejlis of Turkmenistan", which defines the organization of the activities of the national Parliament of the country, its powers, working procedure and structure.

The text of the law was published in the Turkmen press on March 20 and entered into force on that day.

The Law consists of 65 articles. It determines the status of members of Parliament, the functioning of its apparatus, committees and commissions, as well as the powers of the chairman.

Now the Mejlis of Turkmenistan is the main body exercising legislative power. Previously, another structure within the bicameral parliament, the People's Council (Halk Maslahaty), had such a right.

However, the People's Council, as the highest representative body of the people's power, retains the right to consider and approve draft constitutional laws. Also, the body, whose members are representatives of all branches of government and society, retains the legislative initiative.
