Festival “Heart of Asia – Turkmenistan” was held in St. Petersburg

Interactive festival of the culture of the peoples of Central Asia, the “Heart of Asia – Turkmenistan”, organized by the center for intercultural communications “Near East” was held in St. Petersburg.

“Near East” actively cooperates with the Society of Turkmen Culture in St. Petersburg “Mekan” and other public organizations to introduce residents of St. Petersburg with the culture treasury of the countries of the Central Asian region through various events.

A rich program of the current event, which aimed to acquaint the people of St. Petersburg with modern Turkmenistan, its culture and traditions, includes master classes, educational lectures, as well as fashion show of national dresses and dances.

Students from Turkmenistan held quick master-classes on weaving aladja amulets and told about the secrets of its color combinations and importance of this amulets for Turkmen.

Under live singing, the activists of the Council of Turkmen students in St. Petersburg “Bagtyyarlyk” acquainted guests with the art of Kushtdepdi Turkmen folk dance that included into the list of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. They also told about history of this popular dance, which is a part of any celebration events in Turkmenistan today.

Lecture “Facts about Turkmenistan, which you might not know” was of particular interest to the guests of the event. The participants learned interesting information about Turkmen carpets considered to be the best in the world, about the country’s unique sights, including Darvaza crater than burns for decades, curious stories about the role of horses and Alabay dogs in the lives of Turkmen, etc. In addition, the session “What connects St. Petersburg and Turkmenistan for more than 300 years?” took place.

The guests of the festival were acquainted with traditional costume of a Turkmen bride, which is one of the brightest attributes of the national culture, as well as with many components, decorative elements and jewelry that feature the Turkmen national costume.

In the future, “Near East” foresees to organize events that reveal the feature of culture of other Central Asian countries.

In July 2018, the center was the co-organizer of the exhibition “Turkmenistan – the heart of the Great Silk Road” in St. Petersburg.
