Technology never stands still, and every new generation of connectivity opens not just faster internet but entire worlds of possibility we have yet to imagine. 6G is not simply a step forward from 5G — it is a shift from connecting devices to intelligently connecting everything: space, air, earth and the millions of intelligent agents that will work alongside us. With nearly 40 percent of global patents on core 6G technologies, China is not just catching up — it is setting the pace, shaping a future where connectivity becomes as natural as the air we breathe.

China's plan to develop its own 6G technology solutions by 2029 will fuel rapid growth in sectors such as the low‑altitude economy and logistics, and accelerate the deployment of communication networks for AI intelligent agents, an industry researcher said. As the next‑generation mobile infrastructure succeeding 5G, 6G represents a fundamental shift from simply connecting devices to intelligently connecting everything. The technology is expected to achieve peak speeds of up to 1 terabit per second — up to 100 times faster than 5G — while enabling seamless integration of communications with sensors, computing and artificial intelligence across space‑air‑ground networks.

"With our three‑dimensional coverage, ultra‑low latency and high bandwidth, we can empower sectors such as the low‑altitude economy, public safety and logistics. For AI applications, we can provide connectivity for intelligent agents, accelerate the deployment of these use cases and drive their commercial adoption," said Wang Guanli, a researcher of integrated space‑air‑ground networks at China Unicom.

Globally, no country has yet launched a commercial 6G network, and all major players are currently in research, development and standardisation phases. China started 6G development early and has completed the first phase of technical trials. During these trials, the country verified the feasibility of more than 300 key technology solutions, providing proven and effective options for the next phase. China also holds about 40 percent of global patents on core 6G technologies. The first global standard is expected to be finalised by 2029, with commercial deployment scheduled for 2030.

In June, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology launched a joint ministry‑province pilot programme for 6G innovation and development. The programme aims to provide strong support for future commercial 6G deployment. Key priorities include advancing cutting‑edge 6G technologies, deepening integration of communications with artificial intelligence, satellite internet and wireless sensors, and stepping up R&D on 6G base stations, core network equipment, terminals, chips and operating systems. Pilot regions will explore use cases tailored to local conditions, focusing on sectors such as immersive communications, industrial manufacturing, the low‑altitude economy, embodied intelligence and smart maritime operations. As CCTV+ reports. China is steadily moving towards becoming one of the first countries ready for mass 6G adoption, which will allow it to take a leading position in the global digital economy of the next decade.
