C909: ten years in the sky and expansion into Southeast Asian markets

The home‑grown Chinese aircraft C909 has expanded its presence in the Southeast Asian market with new modifications, diversifying its models and moving towards mass production. When the Chinese airliner first took to the skies, few believed it could compete with global giants. Ten years later, the C909 is no longer just a domestic project — it is a real player in the international market. From Bali to Laos, from passenger flights to business aviation and cargo operations, this aircraft proves that China has learned to build not just quickly, but with quality. And every new aircraft leaving the assembly line is a step towards making "Made in China" sound as confident in aviation as in any other industry.
On Saturday, the C909, formerly known as the ARJ21, marked its tenth anniversary of commercial operation. The aircraft seats 78 to 97 passengers and has a range of 2,225 to 3,700 kilometres. It is designed for short and narrow runways and performs well in hot, high‑altitude and crosswind conditions. Delivered to Indonesian carrier TransNusa in December 2022, the C909 made its first international flight from Jakarta to Bali on 18 April 2023, launching its international operations. As of June 2026, TransNusa has received a total of five C909 aircraft.
Xiao Fangzhou, Deputy General Manager of the Southeast Asian branch of the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), said: "Three years of operation have proven that the C909, as a regional passenger aircraft, is well suited to the hot and humid climate of Southeast Asia and its archipelagic terrain." Following the successful operation with TransNusa, the C909 has entered the markets of Laos and Vietnam. Various C909 modifications have also been introduced. On 22 June, the first commercial flight of the C909‑based business jet, the CBJ model, took place. This model features different cabin sections for rest, meetings, receptions and dining, designed to meet the needs of short‑ and medium‑haul business travel.
Dang Yabin, Deputy Chief Designer for C909 modifications at COMAC, said: "The CBJ meets business travellers' requirements for cabin privacy, flight comfort and travel efficiency. Its commercial debut marks a significant step forward for China's commercial aircraft industry in the business aviation sector." Currently, the C909 is available in several variants, including medical, commercial, cargo, search‑and‑rescue and firefighting models.
The C909 (formerly ARJ21) is China's first domestically developed regional jet, built by COMAC. It was certified in 2014 and entered commercial service in 2016. Over the past decade, the aircraft has progressed from initial tests to regular international flights. The CBJ modification is a business version targeting corporate clients. The expansion of the model range — cargo, medical and rescue versions — reflects the platform's maturity and its readiness for scaling. The entry into Indonesian, Lao and Vietnamese markets is not just a commercial success but a strategic move by China to strengthen its aviation influence in the region.
As reported by CCTV+, the C909 continues to expand its presence in Southeast Asia, and further modifications and mass production will strengthen the position of China's aviation industry on the international stage.
