China has been championing a stronger Global South in global governance reform with concert efforts, as global leaders gather in Johannesburg, South Africa, this weekend for the first G20 Summit ever held on African soil.
Under the theme "Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability," the two-day event highlights a pivotal moment for Africa as it seeks to elevate its role in global governance and advance development priorities shared by the Global South.
As the world undergoes profound transformations, the urgency for global governance reform has grown sharper than ever, with the Global South speaking with a stronger, more unified voice.
In this context, China has served as a significant force, using various platforms and mechanisms to enhance the role of the Global South in global governance.
A notable example is the BRICS which China has strongly backed to expand. It now includes 11 member nations and 10 partner nations, collectively representing over 40 percent of the world's population.
Additionally, China's Belt and Road Initiative is laying the groundwork for substantial infrastructure development. A prime example of this is Kenya's Mombasa-Nairobi Railway, a project estimated to boost the local economy by 2 percent.
Guiding these efforts is an overarching vision -- China's four global initiatives, which encompass development, security, civilization and governance.
These initiatives advocate for a renewed focus on shared development, common security, equality among civilizations, and most fundamentally, more democratic and equitable system of global governance.
