A string-less smart guitar developed by a Chinese tech company has gained widespread popularity among consumers in China and abroad, offering immediate musical results and significantly lowering the entry barrier for learning to play.
The revolutionary instrument has been hailed as an "emotional charging station" for young adults as it features touch-sensitive pads and LED chord indicators instead of traditional strings, enabling users to produce authentic accompaniment chords in real time.
For many aspiring musicians, the dream of playing an instrument has long been hindered by a steep learning curve and extensive practice requirements. But, this string-less smart guitar is reshaping that narrative by providing immediate musical results and substantially reducing barriers to entry.
Zhu Haiying, an e-commerce professional based in Shenzhen, had long dreamed of accompanying herself on guitar while singing. The rigorous and time-intensive practice demanded by traditional instruments, however, proved too daunting. After attending a recent gathering with friends, she encountered the string-less smart guitar and was immediately captivated.
"A mobile phone application tells you which pad to strum, just following the light. Within five minutes, each of us had tried it. Finding it so easy and fun, we were completely sold on it," said Zhu.
This string-less guitar, which eliminates the need for music theory and repetitive practice in favor of simple, immediate musical enjoyment, precisely met Zhu's emotional needs and prompted her to make purchase.
This unique instrument was developed by LiberLive, a next-generation music tech brand based in Shenzhen, a city known as China's designer toy capital. The founder, having personally struggled with the complexities of music theory and the extensive practice time required for traditional guitar, recognized this as a widespread barrier for busy office workers and other aspiring musicians.
"We wanted to use technology to simplify complex music theory and bring music closer to everyone," said Li Jiaxin, LiberLive's product manager.
The concept of producing professional-sounding music through simple actions offers users remarkable convenience, while shifting primary technical challenges to the company's research and development team. The company successfully developed a proprietary intelligent performance system. The guitar's built-in chip acts as a "music brain," analyzing chord formations in real-time and summoning corresponding authentic tones. The right-hand pick utilizes magnetic induction technology to simulate the dynamics of strumming. As a result, even a person with zero musical background can produce rich, textured music with a simple press and strum.
Since its launch, this string-less guitar has experienced continuous iteration. Initially released in limited quantities to gauge market demand, the product quickly outstripped supply, emerging as a bestseller both at home and abroad.
At last year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the world's largest personal electronics event, in Las Vegas, the smart device's debut garnered significant attention, leading to its inclusion in TIME magazine's list of The Best Innovations of 2025. The product has even attracted the interest of many Hollywood players.
"Music's emotional value transcends national borders and cultures. From our product's launch in 2023 to now, our total global sales have exceeded 1.1 billion yuan (about 154 million U.S. dollars), with a user base of more than 1 million," said Li Jiaxue, an employee of LiberLive's brand marketing department.
