World Trade Organization Director General Roberto Azevedo congratulated President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on granting Turkmenistan observer status in the WTO. This decision was made by members of the WTO General Council a week ago, on July 22.
According to Mr.Azevedo, this is the result of the activities to establish official relations with the WTO, which the Turkmen leader initiated in 2013. “I am sure that the observer status will open up new opportunities for Turkmenistan to integrate into the multilateral trading system and the world economy,” the Turkmen TV channel Altyn Asyr quoted the message of the WTO Director General in the evening news release.
Roberto Azevedo stated that the WTO Secretariat is ready to assist Turkmenistan in performing the functions of an observer and in preparing for the negotiation process on membership in the organization.
