WHO Regional Director for Europe Hans Kluge expressed appreciation to the people and authorities of Turkey for the solidarity manifested in combating the new type of coronavirus pandemic. He stated this at a joint press conference with Turkish Minister of Health Fahrettin Koca, organized in Ankara on the WHO office opening in Istanbul.
According to Kluge, Turkey is currently undergoing a very important stage in preventing the COVID-19 spread. He noted that the number of dangerous disease-related infections and deaths in the country decreased by 75%.
The WHO representative also added that, thanks to measures to protect the elderly population, Turkey had made critical progress in combating COVID-19.
“We must be prepared to address high-risk problems, especially among older people, which may occur in the fall, when the flu season begins. In order to support Turkey’s success in achieving low COVID-19-related mortality among the elderly population, we will need targeted interferences such as flu immunization, infection prevention and control”, Kluge concluded.
