Turkmenistan – the UN: successes and a new stage of cooperation

Ashgabat hosted the annual session of the National Steering and Coordinating Committee of the Partnership Framework Development Program between Turkmenistan and the UN for 2016-2020.

The meeting participants analyzed the progress of the program over the past year in five main areas, including “qualitative data and monitoring of progress”, “qualitative and inclusive social services”, “ecological sustainability and energy efficiency”, “employment, economic diversification and trade”, and “regulation and supremacy of law”.

The integration of the main SDG indicators into the Program of social and economic development of Turkmenistan for 2019-2025 is mentioned among the main results of cooperation between Turkmenistan and the United Nations in 2019. It would further strengthen the interaction between national priorities and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The importance of the signed memorandums between the ministries and departments and the UN agencies on cooperation in achieving the SDGs, as well as on cooperation between the UN and the government of Turkmenistan in coordinating emergency preparedness and response plan, is highlighted.

The way they engage with young people to generate knowledge dissemination about the SDGs was successful. The selected Young SDG Ambassadors are active among their peers, children and adults throughout the country. Their voice was heard at major international forums, Elena Panova, UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan, said in her opening speech.

To implement projects for 2019-2020, the UN signed a co-financing agreement with the Government of Turkmenistan totaling more than $ 12.6 million.

The participants made proposals on perfecting the actions in 2020.

“The results that we will achieve by the end of this year would determine the nature of our further cooperation in a new five-year cooperation program for 2021-2025,” Panova said.
