The 6th session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction takes place in Geneva, from 13 to 17 May, 2019. The Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction is a biennial forum for information exchange, discussion of latest developments, knowledge and partnership-building across sectors, with the goal of improving implementation of disaster risk reduction through better communication and coordination amongst stakeholders. At this forum, Turkmenistan is represented by a delegation led by the Deputy Minister of Defense, the head of the General Directorate of Civil Defense and Rescue Work.
The 2019 edition of the Global Platform will convene under the theme “Resilience Dividend: Towards Sustainable and Inclusive Societies”.
The Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction is essential component of the monitoring and implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030.
The forum included a High Level Dialogues on the progress in the Sendai Framework Program implementation, the presentation of the global assessment report, the innovation platform, educational laboratories, and thematic side events.
During a round table ministerial meeting, the head of the Turkmen delegation shared the experience of Turkmenistan on the environmental component of the SDGs, the implementation of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.
In this context, the effectiveness of the National Climate Change Strategy of Turkmenistan, which covers global issues of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the development of an action plan to implement the Paris Agreement, was considered.
The State Program of Turkmenistan on Implementation the Main Directions of State Policy in the Civil Defense for the period 2019–2030, in which, in addition to developing Turkmenistan’s steadiness to emergency situations, special attention is paid to the priority areas of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction is of particular importance.
One of the main measures to neutralize carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, stabilize the soil and prevent its erosion is a nationwide event held annually in Turkmenistan to plant 3 million seedlings across the country. Over the past 20 years, more than 100 million trees have been planted in Turkmenistan.
Over the past decade, the Global Platform’s core function is to enable governments and stakeholders to share experience and formulate strategic guidance for the implementation of global disaster risk reduction agreements.
Since 2007, five sessions of the Global Platform have been held. Although each of the sessions was dedicated to specific topics, most of the sessions repeated the following topics in different forms: the Sendai Framework implementation at the national and local levels, investment and economics of disaster risk reduction, communication and coherence with climate change and sustainable development.
During the forum, the head of the Turkmen delegation has a meeting with Ms.Paola Albrito, Head of the European Regional Office of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR). At the meeting, the issues of cooperation to achieve the goals was discussed.
