Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan to increase bilateral freight

In order to increase the volume of traffic between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, a new station, Surhanabad, on the border between the two counties was put into operation, the Information Center of the Uzbek Railways JSC informs.

“In order to increase the volume of traffic between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, to carry out large-scale work on transit cargo transportation, maintenance and repair of cars on the border between the two countries, a new station, Surhanabad, was commissioned.

Export-import cargo transportation operations will be serviced at the new station, the message of the Information Center says.

In March 2017, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev opened new bridges – railway and road – across Amudarya River. Their operation, as well as discounts on rail transit of goods provided on a reciprocal basis, contributed to the growth of freight traffic and the increase in the transit potential of both countries.

At the same times, the leaders of two neighboring states in their speeches note that the volume of bilateral trade and freight so far does not correspond to the trade and economic potential between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
