Turkmenistan and Iran see to boost cross-border trade

Ambassador of Turkmenistan to Iran, Ahmed Gurbanov, and Governor of Iranian Golestan Province, Hadi Haghshenas, discussed the possibility of developing the trade and economic relations between the border subjects of the two states.

The meeting was held in the city of Gorgan. The sides considered the possibility to expand relations between the province of Golestan, Iran, and Balkan, the western province of Turkmenistan, Iranian Students’ News Agency (ISNA) informs.

Hadi Haghshenas, having presented the export potential of the province, expressed interest in boosting trade and business relations with Turkmenistan. He added that Golestan is a home for more than 800 thousand ethnic Turkmens, who have relatives in Turkmenistan, and the development of contacts would strengthen bilateral partnership.

During the meeting, Ambassador Ahmed Gurbanov noted that, in 2018, the mutual trade turnover between Turkmenistan and Iran was more than 5.5 billion US dollars and there is still opportunity to give a new impetus to trade relations.

Earlier, the possibilities to deepen Turkmen-Iranian trade-and-economic cooperation were considered at the session of the Intergovernmental Turkmen-Iranian Commission on Economic Cooperation and at the Business Forum with participation of officials and business representatives of Iran and Turkmenistan held in Ashgabat a month ago, on October 15-16.
