Turkmenistan and Iran discuss practical issues of water and energy cooperation

Minister of energy of Turkmenistan Charymyrat Purchekov discussed issues of expansion of energy cooperation and creation of joint water and energy committee at a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Reza Ardakanian in Tehran.

According to the Ministry of energy of Islamic Republic of Iran, the heads of energy bodies have also examined the issue of the restarting of the second 220-kV transmission line Shatlyk-Sarakhs-Iran.

The parties touched upon a number of practical issues related to the project of the third 500 kW power transmission line, which will run along the Mary-Serakhs-Mashhad route.

“Thus, the energy exchange between the two neighboring countries could reach 850 megawatts”, writes Mehr, citing Ardakanian.

Another equally important area of cooperation is water management, where Iran is ready to deepen the existing cooperation, said the minister.

The water and energy issues were one of the important items on the agenda of the summit talks between the presidents of Turkmenistan and Iran, held in late March in Ashgabat.

Minister of energy of Iran, who also visited the Turkmen capital as part of the accompanying delegation, called this visit a historic milestone in the development of Turkmen-Iranian relations, including energy ties.
