During the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly, a resolution on “Cooperation between the United Nations and the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea” initiated by President of Turkmenistan was adopted. 21 countries joined the co-sponsorship of the Resolution.
The Resolution reflects full support of the outcomes of the Summit of the Heads of the States Founders of the International Fund of Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS), which was held in Avaza National tourist zone on August 24 last year.
The document also makes legal base for cooperation between the UN and IFAS in systematic base. In particular, it is planned to hold in 2019 the consultations with participation of the UN agencies, all country members of the UN and IFAS Executive Committee to study the establishment of the UN Special Programme for the countries of Aral Sea region.
In the framework of its chairmanship in the International Fund of Saving the Aral Sea for 2017-2019, Turkmenistan initiated the development of a Special UN Programme for the Aral Sea basin.
