Japanese Minister of Health Kato Katsunobu stated that the authorities are considering the possibility of using the Avigan anti-flu drug, also known as Favipiravir, to treat the coronavirus infection COVID-2019.

He added that the authorities will study the effect of various anti-flu drugs on coronavirus infection, and if any of the drugs shows its effectiveness, then the agency intends to make it available in medical institutions.

Chinese authorities on December 31 last year reported an outbreak of a previously unknown virus in Wuhan, Hubei Province. The number of infected in mainland China has already exceeded 76 thousand people, of whom 2345 have died, and over 20 thousand have been cured. Outside mainland China, more than a thousand cases of infection have been detected in 26 countries.
