Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan - transport connectivity in action
Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway will reach project capacity by 2022. The corridor will transport up to 15 million tons of cargo, Kazakh TV reports referring to the statement of the Vice Minister for Investment and Development of Kazakhstan Roman Sklyar.
Since its inauguration in 2014, the line has transported 3.3 million tons of cargo.
The increase in the volume of cargo flows along this steel highway is facilitated by the regular imposing by the railway authorities of the two countries of load tariffs that create preferential customs conditions for exporters and carriers.
The longest 700-kilometer segment of the Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway with total length of 938 kilometers passes via the territory of Turkmenistan.
Along with railway connectivity, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan cooperate actively in the sphere of maritime navigation in the Caspian sea.
“Today the national company KazMor-Transflot transports oil from the port of Turkmenbashi to Makhachkala and to the port of Baku. This year, the volume of cargo transportation amounted to more than a million tons," the Deputy Prime Minister commented, noting that the countries plan further to increase cargo turnover.
There are all preconditions to accomplish this task, taking into account the planned commissioning of the International Port in Turkmenbashi with an annual capacity of 17-18 million and the existing new northern terminal Aktau, capable to transship dry cargo up to 3 million tons per year.
In 2016, the trade turnover between Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan exceeded US $ 283 million with a surplus in favor of Turkmenistan. Turkmen exports estimated at US $ 214 million, and imports – US $ 69 million. The countries intend to bring this figure to a billion dollars.
